Searching on Google is not the only way to find an answer anymore. Millions of people use AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude to explore various products, compare different services, and also to know something new. This tendency affects the process of content creation of companies and people’s discovery of brand names. Thus, LLM SEO, or Large Language Model SEO, becomes very popular and significant recently. LLM SEO means creating content that will ensure that the website becomes one of the sources from which the AI system will pull information for the answer that it generates. This is precisely the transition that we guide students through during our digital marketing course in Calicut, as the tools continue to change, but the skill of creating credible content remains the same.
Unlike the classical SEO practice, which includes attempts to improve the company’s position on SERP, LLM SEO seeks to make the content easily comprehensible, reliable, and helpful for the AI model. These models do not calculate keywords and links’ presence on the website. They interpret context, understand the connections between themes and produce their response on the basis of the reliable information they have learned or can access. Thus, ranking by one keyword is not enough now for the businesses. The creation of the correct and high-quality content increases the possibility of becoming an AI model’s reference source. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to the process of LLM SEO now.
LLM stands for Large Language Model – the underlying principle powering popular software’s like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, etc. These programs are trained on millions of texts and in most cases, they also search the web to find an answer, similarly to Google. LLM SEO, therefore, is writing content in such a way that the model can read and believe it enough to mention it when it gives an answer. You need to write to be included, rather than outranking competitors on the result pages.
You may hear about two more terms. AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization and implies creating content answering a specific question and thereby perfectly matching the summary. The other one is GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, meaning making the AI engine able to find and use your content for any case – ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overview, etc. However, these terms get used interchangeably and it is okay. It is the goal, rather than the terms, that counts.
A larger percentage of search results by Google today includes the AI Overview box at the top of the search result, even before appearing any normal link. Most people tend to view the overview and fail to move further down to see more results. If your article was not considered relevant enough to appear in that overview, then its ranking doesn’t matter anymore.
This trend has continued on other different platforms as well. The questions such as “recommendation for best restaurants,” “marketing tips,” and “course suggestion” among others get an answer by the people asking from the platform of ChatGPT, and they believe the answer provided.
Conventional SEO remains the basis, and it hasn’t been rendered useless by new developments. A good structure of website, proper keywords, backlinks, and fast page loading are still important since many AI systems use search engines to access information.
Here the issue is how the page that has been identified is used afterwards. Search engines put websites into some kind of order and leave choosing which of the found ones to access up to the person. An AI system analyses several pages, selects facts that seem to be the most useful and understandable, and then combines them into one answer with no attribution to all the resources. Thus, a problem is transformed from "How to rank higher?" into "How to state this in such way that an AI would want to quote it?" And here lies the secret behind answer-first content. If a user should spend several paragraphs reading before getting the main idea of an article, he is likely to stop.
There are a few practices that will really help, and all of them are quite simple and do not require any sophisticated technologies.
Make sure you include the core answer to the question as soon as possible and preferably in the first few lines, as it will be easier to take out and quote. Use the exact phrases you would use when asking the question as headings, as this will help the model to recognize the structure of the content and understand that it is relevant. Make sure to back up your claims with exact data, numbers, names or examples, as AI tends to prefer content that looks verifiable. Keep your information up-to-date and fresh, as the freshness factor is still very important in determining the reliability of the source. Finally, try to write as if you were explaining something to a friend, as both the reader and the model will find it more useful. All of this does not mean you should not write well. It just means that it is worth writing in such a way as to get rewarded by a machine that summarizes the web.
Marketing professionals who know about this paradigm shift are the only ones who would still be seen after three years, regardless of whether their target audience searches on Google or asks for information from an AI assistant. At Growth Academy, which is considered the best digital marketing institute in Kozhikode, this is precisely what we teach, as the technology used might change, but the practice of creating trustworthy content never gets outdated.
